KPC Important update. Please read and Act. On 15 April, without any prior notice or discussion, City Property on behalf of Glasgow City Council sent us a Notice of Removal telling us to be out of the building by 27 May 2013. The first thing to say is – Don’t panic! We won’t be leaving. But please do take action.

For the last 15 months we have tried to talk to the Council / City Property, funders, other agencies and councillors about how we all might work together to secure the long term future of Kinning Park Complex as a community facility.

We are a strong community making good use of the building and intend to do so for the long term. We have written to City Property asking for urgent clarification of their intentions and asked our local political representatives for an urgent meeting. We will update on progress with that next week.

The number of building users has grown again enormously in the past 2 years and that is fabulous. We need now to ask you all to make your voice heard in support of KPC.

This City Property letter reminds us that despite the huge efforts made by many in the community to keep this building open and in daily use there is still a long way to go to secure our long-term future and fund the major repairs needed.

The main thing to remember is that it is business as usual at KPC. Future bookings are secure. Please continue to make bookings and conduct all business as usual.

But please act to support us – MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD. Please:

Contact local councillors, MP, MSP and MEP to ask them to support our call for City Property to withdraw this Notice and meet with us to discuss the situation (see contact list at end of this message).

Contact City Property directly. Ask them to withdraw the Notice. Feel free to raise any questions or thoughts with them – eg. you might also want to ask them why, while they claim to be the new landlord, they are not prepared to spend a penny on the essential repair work?

Sign-up as a supporter of KPC so that we can provide more evidence of the numbers of people who use the building. Please also encourage all of the people who attend your classes or events and all other building users and friends to sign-up as well.

Below is our new Supporter of KPC sign-up form. Please add your contact details and return it to us.

Please also forward this message to anyone else who should see it. We will be updating our website and facebook page shortly.

As next steps - We urge all friend of KPC to contact the elected representatives and sign-up as a registered supporter of KPC.

Finally, just to be clear, we will NOT be vacating the premises on 27 May 2013 or anytime in the foreseeable future, but we will have to make our voices heard if we are to secure the long-term future of the building and the funding for repairs.

Please let me know if you have any other questions. However please do keep in mind that with all this and the usual work going on it might take a while for us to answer everyone.

All the best, and did I say, it’s business as usual

Lindsay and all at KPC

Below is our supporter signup form and contact details for local politicians and for City Property

Hi Friend of the Kinning Park Complex. Its business as usual at KPC. This Sat 27 April KPC will host a Garden Building Day from 9am to 5pm, followed by The Rites of Spring social from 8pm to late.

KPC Garden Building Day

We have had lots of feedback about the ideas for turning the playground into a community garden space. Thanks! We wont do it all in one day, it will take a number of days over a few months.

This Saturday we make a big start. It’s a voluntary thing. Come along to help, teach, learn or just see what its all about. Jobs this Sat will include building compost bins, building planters, weeding, digging, wood recycling and generally helping out.

A garden design meeting will also be ongoing during the day 12-3pm to get your input on design and plan for the next part of the garden work. Specifically we want to pick your brain about the best construction methods and materials and to plan for building a tool shed (e.g. 3m x 2m), a bike shed (for 20 bikes), a large open sided roofed sitting area / shelter and also for upright planters / living walls, and more ideas on what to plant.

Can you also bring a power drill? We have a few here but would have work for maybe 3 or 4 more of them based on the number of people we expect. If you can bring one please do. We could also do with more hammers x 4, hand-saws x 2, shovels x 2, trowels x 2.

It’s a sawing, screwing, digging and hammering type of day. Dress for getting dirty. We will have gloves and overalls available if you need them. There will be a lunch provided at around 12.30-1pm. Come along.

The Rites of Spring – KPC Social

Spring has sprung.
The grass is riz.
I wonder where the burdies iz?

At long last! A celebration of the long time coming of S P R I N G.

Join us for a refreshing dose of green growth and renewal.

LIVE BAND for Vitalizing Vibrations. Cheap BAR. TEQUILA VERDITAS SERVED – Some Xtra special greenery and zing for your insides…

Fresh and Frisky tunes from DJ RACHEL WALKER.

Foliage and green gowns encouraged. Come get your bloom on!

A FREE Fruit Of The Earth for all guests! 8pm till late. £4 ENTRY

Hope to see you at one or both

The first meeting of the Garden & Bike Shed sub-committee will be taking place in Room 1 at KPC on Tuesday 12th March from 5.30 – 7.00 pm. All are welcome who would like to take part in the planning process to help brighten up our playground.

We have in mind a garden area, including some seating and sheltered spaces, a tool shed, composting, bins and recycling. And a relatively big bike shed.

We have set a target date of Saturday 27th April to physically build/install the main part of the garden and bike shed. We have an offer of help from volunteers with a group called Exchange Scotland; we also have a grant to spend and, with your help, we can make something nice with that space.

Many hands make light work and all that, and it would be great to see the playground brought into use and looking decent. We are looking for design ideas, input on all things gardening, and we also need a few people to help plan and build the bike shed – any architects or builders out there, or just anyone that’s handy with a hammer and saw, make yourself known!

A few of us have come up with a very initial draft drawing of the space incorporating some of these ideas to get an idea of size, scale, and potential layout – you can see that below. Of course, it’s subject to discussion and change as required. If you’d like to contribute to this process, we look forward to meeting you on the 12th. If you can’t make that date, look out for future meetings over the coming weeks, or just come along to help with the work on April 27th.

On Saturday the 23rd of March we are painting more of the corridors and stairways at KPC, and on Saturday the 27th of April we are taking the next big step in creating our community garden. We need your help. Jobs include painting, building raised beds, maybe even building a gazebo, making the tea and helping with the lunch, so something for everybody. KPC is your community centre. If you have the time please come along and muck in. It will make the place nicer for the next time you’re attending an event or class here, it can be a laugh and it’s a chance to meet others from the ever growing KPC family .

A new benefits advice service and community resource centre will be opening up at Kinning Park Complex this February.

Run by West Glasgow Against Poverty (WestGAP), the service will provide advice and information relating to financial issues including benefits, housing, fuel debts and various other areas. WestGAP’s volunteers have a vast range of experience and have gained positive outcomes for those in our community most in need. In addition to this, they have a wide range of contacts, so will ensure that clients will be pointed in the right direction should they be unable to deal with a particular case. The service will be open to all and completely free.

WestGAP will be open two days every week, in Room 1 at KPC:

Wednesday | 10am – 3pm | appointments

Friday | 10am – 1pm | drop-in session

To make an appointment, please call 0141 237 2401 (from Friday 15th February). A WestGAP volunteer will call you back as soon as possible.

You can find WestGAP on Facebook at facebook.com/glasgowagainstpoverty
